Madonna is returning to the MTV Video Music Awards stage for the first time in more than two decades. Organizers announced that she will open the 2026 ceremony in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 27.
The appearance marks her first live performance at the VMAs since 2003, when she shared the stage with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera during one of the show’s most remembered opening numbers. This year, Madonna also leads the nominations with a career-high 11 nods.
Her nominations include Artist of the Year, Video of the Year for Confessions II – The Film, and Song of the Year for Bring Your Love. The ceremony comes after the release of her latest album, Confessions II.
Madonna has a long history with the VMAs, including performances of Like a Virgin in 1984 and Vogue in 1990. She has also led the show’s nominations twice before, in 1990 and 1998.
Snoop Dogg will host the 2026 ceremony, which will air live from Los Angeles.
