Twenty-five years after Britney Spears released I’m a Slave 4 U, choreographer Brian Friedman is looking back at the energy and dedication she brought to the music video.

Speaking at the 2026 Industry Dance Awards in Los Angeles on October 21, Friedman recalled working with the pop star when she was just 19 years old. He described Spears as unstoppable, remembering how naturally she approached the demanding dance routines.

Friedman and fellow choreographer Wade Robson developed movements that complemented Spears’ individual performance style. The creative process was spontaneous, allowing the singer to bring her own personality to the choreography.

Released in September 2001, I’m a Slave 4 U introduced a different musical direction for Spears. Produced by The Neptunes, the song blended pop with R&B influences and served as the lead single from her third studio album, Britney.

Directed by Francis Lawrence, the music video featured elaborate choreography and a distinctive visual style that became closely associated with the song.

Friedman’s memories offer another perspective on a defining moment in Spears’ early career, highlighting the preparation and creativity behind the performance.
